Hacksaw Ridge
02/01/17 Directed by: Mel Gibson This is one of the worst looking movies I've seen in a long time and not a single interesting thing happens ever. I can say it was briefly ok for a bit around 3/4 of the way through and then the ending just had many of the worst things I've ever seen. Gibson's infatuation with slow-motion is the worst thing to ever happen to cinema and the fact that the CGI looks like its from 1997 really drives that point home.

01/31/17 Directed by: Denzel Washington I wish I had more to say about this one. The pacing is really on point for the first half (it goes a little haywire towards the end but nothing too serious) and I really liked the set. I also really dug all the baseball metaphors.

Arrival
01/31/17 Directed by: Denis Villeneuve Easily Villeneuve's best film to date. It still has pacing issues but nothing like his previous films did and its biggest crime is how much time it spends unnecessarily explaining itself at the end. Like, pretty much as soon as the reveal happens we get it. The reveal itself was great but they did too much with it, I guess. Overall, it was a cool concept that I just wish they expanded upon the parts where they're deciphering the language and cut down that ending a bit because some goofy stuff happened.

01/31/17 Directed by: Barry Jenkins Overall this is a nice film but there's just too many consistent problems: 1. The pacing is jank like most modern films. Given the passage of time throughout the film I think it should have been probably about half an hour longer. There just wasn't enough time to get fully invested during any of the chapters. 2. The score often doesn't fit, even though the music itself is pretty nice a good chunk of the time. 3. I really don't like how the film looks. I don't really agree with the artistic choice to make the background completely out of focus much of the time. That being said I have to give it some praise for having something I could call an "artistic choice" because most of the BP nominees I've seen thus far have been completely devoid of that. Anyway, even though I don't think its an amazing film, I'm not the least bit offended by it being a BP nominee.

Hell or High Water (2016)
01/31/17 Directed by: David Mackenzie Not my cup of tea genre-wise and its a very basic entry in that genre. There's really nothing to this film at all but nothing is offensive either minus the orchestral score which was blander than bland and the brisk pace. Honestly, this feels like a direct-to-DVD movie from the late 2000's.

Hidden Figures
01/31/17 Directed by: Theodore Melfi I knew I was in for a doozy based on that poster and the first few scenes were worse than I could possibly imagine. Fortunately it only dipped back to that level a handful of times throughout and for the most part was just excessively bland.

01/30/17 Directed by: Kenneth Lonergan Awful dialog, awful, over-the-top music, awful Casey Affleck, uninteresting story with some really jank cuts and hilarious sound effects. The pacing is fine though and by the end I didn't feel hatred towards it despite being deserving of it technically. I ended up just laughing at it which is better than being miserable.
